Sedans Remain Essential to Skoda's India Portfolio
Skoda Auto India brand director Ashish Gupta believes sedans continue to be the quintessential car, citing their superior driving dynamics and elegance

According to Ashish Gupta, brand director at Skoda Auto India, sedans have not lost their charm. Gupta thinks the sedan body type will continue to make sense for the brand, given its long legacy of sedans, including models like the Octavia, Rapid, and Slavia. The Slavia has been a successful model for Skoda in India, making up nearly 30 percent of all sales in the premium sedan segment.
Sedan Segment Performance
The premium sedan segment in India currently sells around 4,000 to 4,500 units per month. Skoda's sedan line-up in India includes three models: the Slavia, Superb, and Octavia RS. The Slavia remains the entry point into Skoda's sedan portfolio in India and is the Volkswagen Virtus's chief rival.
Gupta attributes the decline of the sedan segment to a lack of focus from manufacturers, who have instead prioritized SUVs. However, he believes sedans will continue to have their fans and people who want to own one, thanks to their superior driving dynamics and pure elegance. The brand director expects the sedan segment to remain a smaller part of the market, but thinks it will continue to evolve as the market matures.
SUV Saturation and Sedan Revival
Gupta expects the market to eventually reach a saturation point with SUVs, making the case for sedans stronger. He thinks first-time buyers and families wanting to own multiple cars will contribute to the demand for sedans. The brand director also points out that Skoda is one of the few automakers worldwide that maintains a focus on the sedan space.
Skoda's Sedan Line-up in India
Skoda's sedan line-up in India includes the Slavia, Superb, and Octavia RS. The Slavia is planned to have a CNG option, which could interest buyers seeking premium features and lower running costs. The Superb diesel will be introduced in its top-spec Laurin & Klement trim in 2027, while the Octavia RS will return to India with limited units. Skoda will be able to cater to mass-market sedan buyers with the Slavia, premium sedan buyers with the Superb, and driving enthusiasts with the Octavia RS.
