Hyundai's SUV Offensive in India: Three New Models to Watch Out For

Hyundai has announced plans to launch three new SUVs in India over the next 12 to 18 months. The company is developing a locally produced compact electric SUV, the Bayon, and the third generation Creta.
The new-gen Creta will be the most substantial change compared to the existing model. Test vehicles have already appeared on Indian roads revealing a squarer profile, flatter body panels and a taller front section. The overall length could move closer to 4.5 metres while the new model is expected to upgrade to Hyundai Motor Group’s modular K3 platform.
Petrol and diesel engines should remain available with a strong hybrid powertrain also under consideration. It could be based on the existing 1.5L NA petrol mill to help compete against Victoris, Grand Vitara and Hyryder while it could spawn a Kia sibling. A significant technology overhaul will accompany the redesigned exterior.
The new Creta may receive Hyundai’s Pleos operating system, AI-based voice functions, expanded connected services and over-the-air software updates. A more advanced Level 2 ADAS package is also expected.
The quirky-looking Bayon will take a different position within Hyundai’s portfolio - sitting between the Venue and Creta. The crossover is already available in international markets and has appeared in testing on Indian roads. Its exterior could feature split LED headlamps, a wide grille, squared wheel arches and a more pronounced rear section.
Hyundai could offer the Bayon several familiar engines for the Indian market. The potential lineup includes a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol, 1.0-litre turbo petrol and 1.5-litre diesel. The cabin may feature a digital instrument cluster, large touchscreen infotainment system, wireless smartphone connectivity and automatic climate control.
The already confirmed compact electric SUV will give Hyundai a new entry point below the Creta Electric. Developed for the high volume EV, the model will hit local production and could target a claimed range of over 500 km. It could be loosely connected with the Syros EV. Fast charging is also expected as the SUV will face established products such as the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV 3XO EV. The new EV is expected during the current financial year ahead of the Bayon and all-new Creta.
The new Hyundai SUVs are expected to give the company new options across the volume-based SUV space. The Creta could also introduce a strong hybrid system to the nameplate.
