Kia Expands Hybrid Lineup in India with Five New Models

Kia has confirmed plans to introduce five hybrid vehicles in India by 2029. The first two arrivals will come before the end of 2026.
The first two hybrid models to arrive in India are the Sorento Hybrid and the hybrid version of the Carnival. The Sorento Hybrid is set to launch on September 4, 2026, followed by the Carnival.
The Sorento Hybrid will introduce Kia's hybrid technology to the domestic market in the premium three-row SUV segment. Production of the India-spec model has already commenced at Kia's Anantapur plant. The SUV will also be Kia's first hybrid model in India to feature an all-wheel drive system, while a diesel powertrain will also be offered.
The Sorento Hybrid will come equipped with Kia AI Assistant, powered by Live Generative AI, which will make its global debut. The system can support conversational interactions and access real-time information. Other highlights include driver assistance tech, a large digital interface, and a spacious cabin.
The Carnival will follow the Sorento as Kia's second hybrid launch in India before the end of 2026. The premium MPV already occupies the upper end of Kia's local portfolio, and the addition of hybrid power will give it a new drivetrain option alongside its existing oil burner.
The international version of the Carnival comes with a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and a six-speed automatic gearbox. Combined output is rated at up to 272 hp and 367 Nm in some markets.
The hybrid system should give the Carnival a more efficient alternative to its existing 2.2-litre diesel engine, which currently develops 193 hp and 441 Nm in India.
The two launches will give Kia its first hybrid presence in India before the remaining three models arriving over the following years. The Sonet, Carens Clavis, and Seltos are expected to receive hybrid powertrains by 2029.
The Seltos' sibling, Hyundai Creta, will more likely feature strong hybrid tech in its next generation, and a similar system could be utilised by the Seltos.
Kia's hybrid lineup expansion in India is a significant development for the company, and it will be interesting to see how these new models perform in the market.
The Sorento Hybrid will be produced at Kia's Anantapur plant, and its launch is scheduled for September 4, 2026.
