Kia has outlined its electrification strategy for the Indian market, confirming that hybrid versions of the Sonet and Carens Clavis will be available by 2029. The announcement was made during the company's 2026 CEO Investor Day event, where Kia president and CEO Ho Sung Song also revealed plans for a locally developed B-segment electric SUV.

## Hybrid Models on the Horizon

The next-generation Sonet, expected in 2027, will feature a hybrid powertrain by 2028 or 2029. While specific technical details remain undisclosed, Kia has been developing a strong-hybrid system for the Sonet. The second-generation model will transition to the K1 platform, which currently underpins the Venue and Syros. This platform will support hybrid technology and advanced electrical and electronics (E&E) architecture, enabling over-the-air updates and remote diagnostics. Additionally, it aims to address the current model's limited rear-seat space.

The Carens Clavis will also receive a hybrid powertrain in its next-generation version by 2029. Currently available with naturally aspirated petrol, turbo petrol, diesel, and all-electric powertrains, the MPV is expected to adopt the hybrid setup from the Seltos, which is due in 2027. Sources suggest the Seltos hybrid will be based on the existing 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine producing 115hp.

## Electric Expansion

Kia is set to introduce a locally developed and manufactured B-segment electric SUV. This model will slot between the Syros and Seltos, likely measuring around 4.2 meters in length. The SUV will compete in the growing midsize electric SUV segment, though specifications are yet to be finalized.

## Immediate Hybrid Launches

The Carnival hybrid is scheduled for launch this year. While details are scarce, the global-spec Carnival strong-hybrid features a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with a hybrid system, delivering a combined output of 242hp and 367Nm. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

By 2030, Kia plans to expand its lineup to 10 models, including ICE, hybrid, and EV-powered offerings. Eight of these models will be electrified, according to Song.
