Skoda is planning to expand its product portfolio in India by introducing a CNG powertrain with the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine powering the Kylaq, Slavia, and Kushaq. This move is aimed at diversifying its offerings and staying relevant in the market, particularly in the wake of the Middle East crisis and policy noise on ethanol blending.

## Skoda’s CNG Plans in India

Skoda is evaluating how to retain its performance edge with a turbo-petrol CNG powertrain. The company is looking to balance fuel efficiency with the performance expected from its models. According to Skoda India brand director Ashish Gupta, a 10-15 percent drop in performance with CNG is acceptable to customers.

The Kylaq segment is the priority for Skoda, where it is trying to tackle CNG. The potential CNG version will be powered by a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, direct-injection turbo-petrol engine, which is shared with the larger Slavia and Kushaq. This engine produces 115hp and 172Nm and is available with both manual and automatic transmission options.

| Engine | Power | Torque | Transmission | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, direct-injection turbo-petrol | 115hp | 172Nm | Manual and Automatic |

Gupta believes there is scope for CNG-powered cars at relatively higher price points, beyond the traditionally budget-focused segment. He thinks that even premium customers who are okay with buying a CNG car purely for the economic benefits they derive.

Skoda is evaluating how to get the right product, right solution, at the right value proposition, at the right time. The company is trying to make sure that the CNG version of its models meets the performance expectations of its customers while also providing fuel efficiency.

The introduction of a CNG powertrain with the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine in the Slavia, Kushaq, and Kylaq models in India will be a significant move for Skoda. It will help the company to stay relevant in the market and provide customers with more options.
