The updated 2027 Geely EX5 electric vehicle will be revealed on September 21. A report by Car News China states the model shifts to a rear-mounted motor, boosting power and creating more front storage space.

New images show the EV's considerably larger front trunk. While its exact volume is unconfirmed, an inscription on the frunk indicates a maximum load rating of 50 kilograms. The publication notes that the smaller Geely EX2 model has a 70-litre front storage compartment.

Powertrain and Performance Shift

The major change is a move to a rear-mounted, single-motor powertrain. This switch to rear-wheel drive delivers a significant power increase. Output rises to 333 PS, up from the current model's 218 PS.

The charging port has been relocated, no longer situated on the front fender. The new model will also use an LFP battery, though its capacity has not been revealed. For comparison, the latest Proton eMas 7 Premium Plus sold in Malaysia is equipped with a 68.39 kWh LFP battery.

Updated Dimensions and Design

The vehicle's overall dimensions have grown slightly. The shift in powertrain layout appears to have liberated extra space at the front.

The 2027 EX5 measures 4,636 mm long, 1,920 mm wide and 1,670 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. This makes it 21 mm longer and 19 mm wider than its predecessor, while the wheelbase remains unchanged.

Market Context and Timeline

This development mirrors a move made by BYD with its Atto 3 model, which also shifted to rear-wheel drive in its Evo guise. That model gets a 313 PS motor and a 74.88 kWh battery.

The RWD update for the Geely EX5 will arrive some time after its Proton eMas 7 twin. The Proton-badged model received an update with the Premium Plus variant in June, and local assembly in Malaysia only began late last year. The Geely EX5/E5 update was initially leaked in a Chinese regulatory filing in June.

The report suggests the larger frunk is a direct benefit of the new rear-drive layout. Final specifications, including the new LFP battery's capacity, await the official debut later this month.
