Hyundai's HE1i Compact EV Targets Late 2026 India Launch
Hyundai has accelerated the launch of its India-made HE1i compact electric SUV to late 2026. The model will use a dedicated EV platform and Svolt battery cells initially, offering Standard and Long Range variants.

Hyundai Motor India will launch its most affordable electric SUV, codenamed HE1i, by the end of 2026. The company's Managing Director and CEO, Tarun Garg, confirmed the accelerated timeline, moving the debut forward from an initial target of March 2027.
Development has progressed faster than anticipated. Hyundai will design and manufacture the new compact EV locally to target the mainstream electric SUV segment. Production will take place at the company's Sriperumbudur plant in Tamil Nadu.
Platform and Battery Strategy
The HE1i will not share its foundation with the upcoming Creta Electric. Instead, it will use Hyundai's dedicated E-GMP (K) architecture. This is the affordable version of the brand's electric platform, which also underpins the international Inster EV.
A significant shift involves the battery supply. Hyundai originally planned to use cells from its Indian partner, Exide. Delays in Exide's production program have forced a temporary change. "The first batch of HE1i EVs will therefore use Svolt battery cells," the company stated. Hyundai intends to switch to locally produced Exide cells once they become available, a move aimed at preventing launch delays.
Expected Specifications and Features
The compact EV will be offered in Standard Range and Long Range versions. Hyundai has not released official specifications for the Indian model, including battery capacity, motor output, or claimed range.
The international-market Inster provides a potential reference point, though its figures may not directly translate to the Indian model.
| Variant | Battery Capacity (kWh) | WLTP Range (km) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Range (Inster reference) | 42 | Up to 300 |
| Long Range (Inster reference) | 49 | Up to 355 |
Hyundai confirmed the HE1i will not be a bare-bones offering. It will feature a next-generation infotainment system and Level 2 advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). The final equipment list is pending, but the global Inster includes dual 10.25-inch displays, automatic climate control, and a 360-degree camera.
Competitive Landscape
The HE1i will enter a fiercely competitive segment. Its primary rivals will include the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, and the Kia Syros EV. By positioning this model below the Creta Electric, Hyundai aims to attract a much broader audience to its electric vehicle lineup. The company's strategy hinges on local production, a dedicated EV platform, and a feature-rich package to stand out in the growing market.
