The Kia Sorento, the Korean brand's flagship ICE SUV in India, directly competes with the popular Toyota Fortuner in the premium three-row segment. A comparison of their top diesel variants reveals the Sorento HTX(A) undercuts the Fortuner 4x4 AT Neo Drive 48V by approximately Rs 4.5 lakh while packing more features.

Dimensions and Space

The Sorento is slightly larger than the Fortuner in key dimensions. It is 20mm longer overall with a 70mm longer wheelbase, and 45mm wider. The Kia also offers larger wheels and an optional six-seat layout with second-row captain's chairs. The Fortuner, however, stands 50mm taller than its rival.

Powertrain and Drivetrain

The Toyota Fortuner uses a larger and more powerful diesel engine, paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system for functions like torque assist and brake energy recuperation. The Sorento counters with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, which the report suggests could enable better highway fuel economy than the Fortuner's 6-speed unit. The top-spec Sorento diesel is also offered in a front-wheel-drive layout, unlike the standard all-wheel-drive Fortuner.

Feature and Equipment Showdown

In exterior features, the SUVs are closely matched. The Sorento offers sequential turn indicators and more colour options. The Fortuner provides rear fog lamps and puddle lamps, which the Sorento lacks.

The interior is where the Sorento pulls decisively ahead. It features larger screens, a panoramic sunroof, more speakers, wireless phone connectivity, rear-seat ventilation, ambient lighting, and a fully digital interior rearview mirror. The Fortuner cannot match this list of creature comforts.

Driving and Safety Tech

Driving aids further separate the two. The Sorento includes adaptive cruise control and a smart park assist function. It offers Eco, Sport, Smart, and Normal drive modes. The Fortuner, signaling its off-road intent, provides more terrain-specific modes like Mud, Sand, Rock, Dirt, and Deep Snow, compared to the Sorento's Snow, Mud, and Sand modes.

Safety is another clear win for the Kia. The Sorento adds side parking sensors, three more airbags, and a suite of features absent on the Fortuner. These include Level 2+ ADAS, rain-sensing wipers, an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, a tyre-pressure monitoring system, a 360-degree camera, and a built-in dual-channel dashcam.

The report concludes that for buyers who primarily drive on paved roads and want modern features, the Sorento is the obvious choice. For those prioritizing off-road capability, outright power, and a reputation for durability, the older Fortuner still holds merit. All prices cited are ex-showroom.
