Mahindra Thar OG Gains New Platform and Tech for 2026
Mahindra's updated 2026 Thar OG features a new platform, more powerful engines, and an electronic locking differential.

Mahindra has comprehensively updated the Thar for the 2026 model year, introducing the Thar OG suffix. The changes span a new platform, revised suspension, increased power, and additional features compared to the 2025 model.
New Platform and Suspension
The Thar OG moves to the newer M_Glyde 4G platform, first seen on the larger Thar Roxx. Mahindra claims this platform provides higher structural stiffness than the one used by its predecessor. The rear suspension has also been upgraded to a Penta-link setup with a Watts Link, borrowed from the Thar Roxx and Scorpio-N. This model also debuts Frequency Dependent Damping, branded as DAVINCI dampers, on the Thar line.
Enhanced Off-Road and On-Road Tech
Key mechanical upgrades aim to improve capability and drivability. The mechanical locking differential is now an electronically assisted unit. Dedicated terrain modes for snow, sand, and mud are new, alongside Zip and Zoom drive modes. For the first time in the Thar's history, it uses electric power steering, replacing the previous hydraulic system that was noted for being heavy at low speeds.
More Powerful Engines
While carrying over the same engine options, Mahindra has increased output for both. The power and torque figures for the updated powertrains are as follows:
| Engine | Power | Torque | Increase Over Predecessor |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.2-litre diesel | 152 hp | 330 Nm | +18 hp, +30 Nm |
| 2.0-litre turbo-petrol | 162 hp | 330 Nm | +10 hp, +30 Nm |
Safety and Interior Updates
The safety suite receives significant updates, though some features are variant-specific. Top-spec versions with six airbags get a Head-Pelvis-Thorax-Shoulder (HPTS) airbag system. Mahindra says this system protects the head, pelvis, thorax, and shoulders of front and rear passengers during a side impact. All-wheel disc brakes and front parking sensors are also new but limited to top variants. Six airbags are not standard across the lineup.
Inside, the seats now feature leatherette upholstery instead of fabric. A center armrest with cupholders is provided for rear passengers. New convenience features include a wireless phone charger, cornering headlamps, and push-button start.
Cosmetic Refinements
Exterior updates give the Thar OG a fresher appearance. It now features full-LED lighting, with C-shaped DRLs in the headlamps and LED fog and taillamps replacing older halogen units. The bumpers are new with a dual-tone finish, and the wheels have grown to 19 inches in diameter.
