The Mahindra Thar OG's September 2026 update introduces DaVinci dampers as standard, enhancing its off-road suspension

Mahindra has fitted its DaVinci dampers as standard across the Thar OG range with a September 2026 update. This marks a significant suspension upgrade for the lifestyle off-roader, directly impacting its ride and handling. The Thar OG starts at Rs 10.32 lakh for the base AXT diesel 2WD MT trim, which is Rs 2.27 lakh cheaper than the base-spec Maruti Suzuki Jimny Zeta Pro MT.

How the Thar OG stacks up against Jimny and Gurkha 3-door

The Thar OG competes directly with the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Force Gurkha 3-door in the mass-market off-roader segment. It holds distinct advantages in engine power and terrain technology. The Jimny has the longest wheelbase, while the Gurkha 3-door rides the highest off the ground. Key comparative dimensions and angles are detailed below.

The Thar OG offers three engine options, while its rivals each offer one. Its 2.0-litre petrol engine produces 162hp and is the most powerful of the trio. The Thar OG's 2.2-litre diesel produces the highest torque. These stronger engines can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox and offer a choice between rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive layouts. The 1.5-litre diesel is available only in rear-wheel drive with a 6-speed manual.

The Jimny offers 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic options with 4WD standard. The Gurkha 3-door has a 5-speed manual gearbox with 4WD. On suspension, the Thar OG and Gurkha use independent double-wishbone fronts. The Jimny uses a 3-link rigid-axle setup at both ends. The Thar OG uses a five-link rear suspension with a Watt’s link, while the Gurkha uses a multi-link rear with a track bar.

A key differentiator is terrain modes in 4WD, a feature exclusive to the Thar OG. Both the Thar OG and Jimny use electronic locking differentials in 4WD, whereas the Gurkha 3-door uses a manual locking differential.

Trim levels and pricing structure of the updated Thar OG

The Thar OG is available in three trim levels: AXT, LXT, and ZXT. Prices range from Rs 10.32 lakh to Rs 18.99 lakh, ex-showroom. The base AXT trim is limited to the single 1.5L diesel engine with a rear-wheel drive setup and manual gearbox. The LXT and ZXT trims provide access to all three engines and both gearbox options. The top-of-the-line model is the ZXT Diesel 4WD AT, priced at Rs 18.99 lakh.

Design and cabin updates define the Thar OG’s 2026 refresh

The 2026 Thar OG features a redesigned front fascia with a new grille bearing a 'THAR' word mark. It gets new LED headlamps with signature C-shaped daytime running lights and LED fog lamps with a built-in cornering function. New front and rear bumpers and a wider track complete the exterior changes, which are heavily inspired by the Thar Roxx.

The vehicle rides on new 19-inch alloy wheels on the ZXT trim and includes new LED tail-lights with 'OG' branding on the tailgate. Mahindra introduced two new paint options: Artemis Silver and Jeans Blue.

Inside, the dashboard layout remains largely identical to the older model. Updates include new Truffle Brown leatherette upholstery and an armrest for second-row occupants. Mahindra has added more sound deadening materials to improve NVH levels. The cabin also gets a new touchscreen infotainment unit and a digital driver’s display. The top-spec Thar OG ZXT trim rides on 19-inch wheels.
