Mitsubishi Motors unveiled the third-generation Pajero at the 33rd Tokyo Motor Show in October 1999. The SUV represented a significant departure from its predecessor, with a larger, more rounded body that initially surprised some observers, as reported by Headlightmag.

The development project for this new Pajero began around 1995. This was a peak time for recreational vehicles in Japan, even as the second-generation model remained highly popular globally. Market research revealed a key shift: many customers moving from sedans wanted a family vehicle for travel and daily city use, but found the previous body-on-frame Pajero lacked the expected comfort.

This presented a difficult challenge for Mitsubishi's engineers. They needed to create a more comfortable, city-friendly vehicle while preserving the rugged, off-road prowess that defined the Pajero's reputation. The goal was to blend proven rally technology with modern comforts for a new global standard.

The engineering team, led by Project Engineer Ushiyama Fumio, established a core development policy. They aimed to create a "new global standard Pajero" by fusing endurance rally experience with advanced technology, focusing on fundamental user values, and applying high-tech solutions for performance, environmental friendliness, and safety.

Key Engineering Changes

This philosophy resulted in several fundamental changes from the prior generation. The most significant was the move from a traditional body-on-frame construction to a semi-monocoque structure. The front-midship engine placement was retained. A new fully independent four-wheel suspension system was introduced, paired with the Super Select 4WD II (SS4-II) drivetrain.

Further innovations included a carbon fibre reinforced resin centre propeller shaft and the RISE high-strength safety body structure. The fuel tank was positioned within the wheelbase for improved safety in rear collisions.

Design and Environmental Focus

The design pursued a "Smart design" and "Ecology conscious" approach. Chief Designer Hiroshi Mizutani, who also designed the first-generation Pajero, led the team. The larger body improved interior space and accessibility, with a lower floor for easier entry. Wheelbase variants offered specific benefits: the short-wheelbase model featured a dedicated rear door for back seat access, while the long-wheelbase version maintained rear visibility with underfloor storage for the third row.

Environmental measures were a stated priority. The development team incorporated cleaner Diesel DI and GDI engines, improved fuel efficiency, and reduced emissions. Weight reduction and improved aerodynamics, with a drag coefficient (Cd) 10% better than the old model, were achieved. The use of hazardous substances was eliminated, and the proportion of recycled materials was increased.

The project leaders named in the source were Ushiyama Fumio (Project Engineer), Iwata Taoru (Product Concept), Nishioka Yoshiki (NVH and durability testing), Hiroshi Mizutani (Chief Designer), Miyagawa Yuji (Clay Modeler), and Joudo Kinya (Exterior Designer).

At its debut, the silver three-door model was on a rotating stage. The larger, more bulbous five-door version was open for attendees to sit in, providing the first real-world look at Mitsubishi's comfort-focused off-roader for the new century.
