Toyota has expanded its Gazoo Racing (GR) lineup with a new entry-level racing kart. The GR Kart, retailing for 385,000 yen, is designed to lower the barriers to karting for children and families by tackling common issues like cost, transportation, and maintenance.

Developed in line with Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda's vision to make motorsports more accessible, the kart is manufactured by the Gamagori GR Kart Workshop in Aichi Prefecture. The company states it is applying Toyota Production System principles to reduce costs and create products that help newcomers start and continue in the sport.

Engineering for Ease and Durability

The 83-kg kart is powered by a 215 cc engine using a belt-drive system to avoid chain oil mess. It features an automatic tensioner, eliminating periodic adjustments. A built-in, self-charging battery removes the hassle of separate battery mounting and charging.

For consistent performance, the engine uses a newly developed diaphragm carburetor for four-stroke engines. This design minimises the impact of fuel slosh during cornering because it lacks a float chamber. A primer pump draws fuel before starting, making engine priming effortless. Durability is enhanced with a rust-resistant stainless steel rear axle and internal metal fuel lines in the tank to resist gasoline degradation.

Safety and Adjustability Features

Safety elements include a bumper designed to prevent other karts from riding up onto a rear tire in a collision. Hub stopper pins in the rear aim to prevent the hub from detaching, and the throttle cable has a specific mounting method to prevent it from sticking open.

The seat has a designated hand-rest area and is shaped to shield hands from the hot muffler. It is paired with sliding pedals and a tiltable steering wheel to adjust the driving position. Toyota says the kart can accommodate riders from 135 to 185 cm tall. A weight box can hold up to 15 kg of ballast for racing and includes a mount for a transponder.

Practical Storage and Availability

With compact dimensions, the GR Kart is designed for easy transport and storage. Its size allows it to fit into most family minivans, like Toyota's Noah or Voxy, without disassembly. It can also be stored vertically without draining fuel or oil, thanks to an upright-storage-compatible oil catch tank and fuel filler orientation.

Currently, the GR Kart is only sold in Japan at 36 participating kart tracks and certain GR Garage locations. Toyota aims to increase the number of sales points in the future.
