BMW has launched the new-generation 3 Series, its most significant update to the core sedan in years. The debut introduces the first fully electric i3 models and a new combustion flagship, the M350 xDrive, all built on the brand's Neue Klasse architecture with a redesigned '2.5-box' silhouette.

Electric i3 leads with performance and tech

The electric lineup is spearheaded by the i3 50 xDrive, which tops the range with dual motors and all-wheel drive. It uses BMW's sixth-generation eDrive technology with an 800V architecture and cylindrical battery cells. The system supports bidirectional charging. BMW said: "The i3 50 xDrive supports DC charging at up to 400 kW." Under specified high-power charging conditions, the company claims it can add up to 423 km of WLTP range in ten minutes.

The i3 50 xDrive has an energy consumption as low as 13.4 kWh/100km. Both electric models are available with wheel sizes from 19 to 21 inches and will be manufactured at BMW's plant in Munich. A more powerful i3 M60 xDrive is scheduled to join the lineup in 2027.

M350 xDrive steps up as combustion flagship

Replacing the M340i, the new M350 xDrive becomes the flagship combustion model. It uses a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine with a 48V mild-hybrid system. The powertrain delivers approximately 437 hp and 580 Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.1 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

Adaptive M suspension is standard. A new 'Drift Moment' function allows power to be directed exclusively to the rear wheels. For petrol buyers, two four-cylinder variants with TwinPower Turbo and 48V mild-hybrid technology will also be available at launch. Combustion-engine versions, with wheel options from 18 to 20 inches, will be produced in Dingolfing.

Digital cockpit and driver aids evolve

Inside, all models feature the BMW Panoramic iDrive system with a 17.9-inch driver-oriented central display. The infotainment is powered by BMW Operating System X, which is based on the Android Open Source Project and includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. The system supports over-the-air software updates. Integration of Amazon Alexa+ technology to enhance voice interaction is planned for supported markets.

A Panoramic Vision system projects key information onto the lower windscreen. For driver assistance, BMW will offer Level 2 systems, including a Motorway Assistant that supports hands-free driving at up to 130 km/h in designated markets. Further navigation-guided urban assistance functions are planned from 2027. A plug-in hybrid variant will join the range in 2027.

The electric i3 will be manufactured in Munich while combustion-engine versions are built in Dingolfing.
