Kia edges ahead of Toyota in monthly ranking

The report notes the monthly order differs from the fiscal year-to-date figures. For the period from April to August 2026, Toyota remains in fifth place with 148,732. Kia is sixth with 136,034, trailing Toyota by 12,698 on a year-to-date basis. Rushlane suggests Kia could gain more sales momentum in coming months, thanks to the new Sorento and upcoming Carens CNG and Carnival Hybrid models.

Sequential sales show a monthly dip

Despite the strong annual comparisons, combined sales for the top six manufacturers fell 4.28% compared to July 2026. Total August sales were 413,329, down from 431,788 the previous month.

Maruti Suzuki accounted for most of this reduction, with its sales dropping 9.80% month-on-month. Toyota sales fell 6.90%, and Mahindra saw a 1.32% dip. In contrast, Tata Motors grew 4.22% sequentially. Kia sales increased 2.99%, and Hyundai was nearly flat with a 0.34% gain.

Fiscal year-to-date sales cross two million

For the first five months of the 2027 financial year, combined sales for these six manufacturers reached 2,033,228. This represents a 29.17% increase over the corresponding period in the previous fiscal year, with an additional 459,113 vehicles sold.

Maruti Suzuki leads the year-to-date rankings with 898,402 and a 44.19% share. Tata Motors follows with 308,030, ahead of Mahindra's 294,050 and Hyundai's 247,980. Toyota and Kia hold the fifth and sixth positions, respectively. Among the six, Tata Motors has registered the strongest fiscal year-to-date growth at 50.73%. Maruti Suzuki's growth for the period stands at 35.58%.

The overall picture for August shows strong annual momentum for most major carmakers, even as sequential sales softened. All six manufacturers have reported growth for the fiscal year so far compared to the same period last year.
