Mitsubishi Unveils New Pajero for 2026 Launch

Mitsubishi has announced that the all-new Pajero will debut worldwide on 2nd September 2026, with a commercial rollout in early 2027. The announcement was made by the company and reported by Rushlane.

Launch and Platform

The new Pajero marks the fifth generation of the model and will be positioned as a serious off-roader. Unlike its predecessor, which used a unibody construction, the upcoming vehicle will return to a body-on-frame chassis. The ladder-frame design is derived from the platform used on the Triton pickup, signalling a focus on durability and off-road capability.

Off-Road Capability

Mitsubishi has confirmed that the Pajero will be equipped with the S-AWC (Super All-Wheel Control) system that is already available on the Triton. S-AWC is an advanced four-wheel-drive system that uses torque vectoring to manage the front-to-rear torque split, improving traction and stability on varied terrain. The system also incorporates braking adjustments for both on-road and off-road use.

Reports indicate that the new Pajero could also feature Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD-II transfer case. This transfer case, which is available on the Triton, allows drivers to switch between two-wheel drive, full-time all-wheel drive and low-range modes. Some enthusiasts speculate that a dedicated off-road variant may be introduced, comparable to rivals such as the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.

Powertrain Speculation

Powertrain options for the new Pajero have not yet been disclosed. However, Mitsubishi has been developing diesel-hybrid powertrains, and it is likely that a diesel-hybrid version could be offered. Reports also suggest that plug-in hybrid and fully electric variants might be introduced later, depending on market demand. Multiple drive modes - including Eco, Normal, Gravel, Sand, Snow, Mud and Rock - are expected to be available.

Exterior and Interior Highlights

Teasers released by Mitsubishi show a sand-based theme that highlights the vehicle’s Dakar heritage. The images reveal two distinct front fascia profiles, suggesting that styling will differ for select markets. Pixel-style, vertically stacked lighting elements have been confirmed on test mules.

Interior teasers show a 14.3-inch screen that includes a 3-gauge meter homage widget. The cabin will feature semi-aniline leather seat backs (S-EXCEED grade) and semi-aniline leather seat surfaces. Ventilated seats are also shown in the teasers.

A hand-drawn sketch shared by enthusiasts depicts the centre console and instrument panel layout. The sketch includes a 4WD dial, transfer case controls, a shift lever with P R N D M positions, a wireless charging area, and buttons for hill-descent control and rear differential lock.

Market Outlook

The new Pajero is expected to launch in Asian markets in early 2027. It is unclear whether the model will be introduced in India. A launch in the United States is anticipated in 2030, where the vehicle will be sold under the Montero name. Mitsubishi plans to expand the Pajero family with smaller models that will likely use hybrid technology, with potential launches between 2028 and 2030.
