Reviews: Mahindra has launched the XUV3XO ZNG, its first factory-fitted CNG SUV, priced from Rs 9.99 lakh

Mahindra has launched the XUV3XO ZNG, its first factory-fitted CNG offering in the sub-4m SUV segment. The vehicle is positioned as a direct rival to the Tata Nexon and expands the XUV3XO lineup with a new fuel option. This marks Mahindra's first passenger vehicle CNG product since the KUV100 Trip.

Powertrain and efficiency

The XUV3XO ZNG is based on a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol bi-fuel engine. It can run on both petrol and CNG. On CNG, the engine produces 114.5 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque. It uses higher-capacity injectors that fuel at 10 bar of pressure, which is higher than the 4-6 bar typical of rivals. Mahindra claims an efficiency figure of 24.7 km per kilogram of CNG. Real-world fuel efficiency is expected to be slightly lower than this claimed figure.

Variants and pricing

The CNG variant is available in four trim levels. A new lower variant, the MX Edge ZNG, was introduced to lower the entry price.

VariantPrice (Ex-showroom)
MX Edge ZNGRs 9.99 lakh
REVX Edge (O) ZNGRs 10.79 lakh
AX5 ZNGRs 11.19 lakh
REVX A ZNGRs 12.27 lakh

Design, boot space and features

The XUV3XO ZNG uses a dual-cylinder CNG storage solution mounted under the boot floor. This design improves boot space usability compared to single-tank setups. The spare wheel is retained and positioned under the vehicle body, similar to the Tata Nexon. Boot capacity in the CNG variant is 270 litres. This is down from 364 litres in the petrol XUV3XO. For comparison, the Tata Nexon offers 382 litres in its petrol variant and 321 litres in its CNG model.

The SUV retains its boxy, squared-off design with C-shaped LED daytime running lights. The rear end, constrained by sub-4 metre length rules, features connected LED tail lamps and a chunky bumper.

Safety, equipment and limitations

Safety equipment includes six airbags and seatbelt reminders for all seats. All four wheels have disc brakes. The chassis is robust and reinforced. Mahindra promises a 5-star crash rating even with the added CNG hardware. The semi-independent rear suspension has been re-tuned to account for the weight of the CNG equipment.

Inside, a dashboard button allows switching between CNG and petrol modes. The instrument cluster displays fuel levels for both systems. A key limitation is the transmission offering. The XUV3XO ZNG is available only with a manual gearbox for now. The absence of an automatic option may limit its appeal for city buyers.

Driving impressions are forthcoming. ZigWheels said: "Stay tuned to ZigWheels, as we get behind the wheel of the XUV 3XO ZNG later this week and bring out our first impressions."
