BMW electrical fire destroys four vehicles at Jakarta parking lot
Four vehicles were completely destroyed in a fire at the TIS Square parking lot in Tebet, Jakarta, with fire officials suspecting an electrical short circuit in a BMW as the origin of the blaze.

Four vehicles were destroyed in a fire at the TIS Square parking lot in Tebet, Jakarta. The South Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency identified a BMW as the suspected source of the blaze, which was sparked by an electrical short circuit.
Sjukri Bahanan, Head of Operations for the agency, confirmed the incident at the location on Jalan Letjen MT Haryono. The four vehicles involved were a BMW with license plate B-2037-KIP, a Daihatsu Ayla, a Suzuki Ertiga, and a Toyota Avanza. Bahanan confirmed there were no injuries or fatalities. Parking staff reported seeing smoke from the BMW unit first. The fire then spread to the three other vehicles parked nearby, a rapid escalation aided by close parking spacing.
"Petugas melihat asap di unit BMW. Api di mobil BMW menjalar ke tiga mobil (Ertiga, Ayla, Xenia)," parking staff said. Firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze.
Emergency response and timeline
The vehicle owner and a parking attendant first noticed the fire. Staff attempted to fight it with a light fire extinguisher but failed. The fire department was contacted at 15:44 WIB.
Firefighters from the Tebet Sector arrived at the scene just two minutes later, at 15:46 WIB. They deployed six fire pump units and 28 personnel. The operation was declared complete at 16:15 WIB, with the fire fully extinguished.
Common causes of vehicle fires
This incident highlights the persistent risk of fires in parked vehicles. Experts note that modern cars always have standby current in the wiring to power systems like the ECU and alarms, which can pose a risk for electrical faults. Sjukri Bahanan pointed directly to the BMW, stating the suspected cause was an "electrical short circuit in the BMW."
Electrical faults are just one of many potential ignition sources. Industry analysis lists at least ten common causes for vehicle fires, many related to maintenance and modifications.
Safety recommendations for owners
To mitigate these risks, regular visual checks of the engine bay are advised. Owners should be alert to unusual smells, such as burning or fuel, which warrant an immediate workshop inspection. For emergency response, keeping a dry chemical powder fire extinguisher in the vehicle is recommended for tackling electrical and fuel fires at their earliest stage. Vehicle owners are advised to conduct regular visual engine checks and be alert to unusual smells like burning or fuel as a precaution against electrical and fuel fires.
