Reviews: Jaguar has unveiled the Type 01, its most powerful production car ever, delivering 1,016 bhp and a 720 km range

Jaguar has taken the wraps off the Type 01, its most powerful production car to date, ahead of a planned 2027 launch. The electric four-seat grand tourer delivers 1,016 bhp and 1,365 Nm of torque from a three-motor powertrain.

The production version retains the bold styling of the Type 00 concept revealed in 2024, making its world premiere in New York. Its design, electric architecture and move further upmarket establish the direction for the brand’s next generation of vehicles.

Technical specifications highlight extreme performance and advanced EV architecture

Built on the dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA), the Type 01 uses three electric motors: two powering the rear axle and one at the front. Its 850V electrical architecture supports DC fast charging at up to 350 kW, capable of adding approximately 321 km of range in 13 minutes under suitable conditions.

A 118 kWh usable battery pack provides a WLTP-claimed range of up to 720 km. The car's immense power translates to startling acceleration figures.

Design and aerodynamics push boundaries with active systems and minimalist cues

The car's length exceeds 5.2 metres on a wheelbase of around 3.2 metres, riding on massive 23-inch wheels. It features a massive rectangular fascia with slim LED headlights, a high shoulder line with flush-fitting door handles, and a sloping roofline.

Active aerodynamics include front cooling vanes and a three-stage deployable rear spoiler, contributing to a claimed drag coefficient of 0.23. The rear tail lamps are concealed within horizontal detailing when switched off, and there is no conventional rear windscreen. A rear-facing camera and a digital ClearSight display inside the cabin provide visibility.

Luxury-focused interior and chassis technology aim for grand tourer refinement

The four-seat cabin is divided by a central spine, targeting the higher end of the luxury market. A minimalist dashboard is dominated by a 24-inch OLED display, supplemented by a seven-inch vertical touchscreen for climate and media controls. A panoramic soundbar and heated and ventilated seats for all occupants are standard.

Boot capacity is around 450 litres, expandable by folding the rear seats. The chassis combines double-wishbone front and integral-link rear suspension with air springs, active dampers, torque vectoring, and rear-wheel steering for an 11.5-metre turning circle.

Controversial launch signals Jaguar’s future direction amid delayed availability

Described as Jaguar’s most powerful and most controversial road car to date, the Type 01 represents more than a replacement for an existing Jaguar. It offers five driving modes: Jaguar, Dynamic, Efficient, Ice & Snow, and Curated. Dynamic mode increases the rearward power bias and sharpens steering, accelerator response, and suspension settings.

Order books for the new grand tourer are expected to open in early 2027.
