The Leapmotor B03X electric SUV is set to go on sale in Malaysia by the first half of 2027. The vehicle will be locally assembled at the Stellantis plant in Gurun, Kedah.

Importing the car fully built from China is not possible due to new regulations. These rules require imported EVs to have a minimum power output of 180 kW and a CIF value of at least RM200,000. Local assembly allows Stellantis to circumvent these barriers.

Stellantis ASEAN managing director Isaac Yeo highlighted the advantage of local production last year. "That's where my advantage comes in. I'm one of the few OEMs who have a plant in Malaysia," he told reporters. He suggested local assembly could help maintain competitive pricing.

Specifications and Performance

The Malaysian-spec B03X will mirror the international version sold in Europe. It will be powered by a single front-mounted motor producing 197 hp and 200 Nm of torque. This setup enables a 0-100 km/h time of 8.6 seconds and a top speed of 160 km/h.

Two LFP battery options from Gotion will be available in Europe, and these are expected for Malaysia. The specifications for these packs are as follows:

Battery SizeWLTP RangeFast Charging (30-80%)Max DC Charge Rate
39.8 kWhUp to 292 km~16 minutes133 kW
53.0 kWhUp to 382 km~16 minutes133 kW

Both batteries support 11 kW AC charging. The European model's performance is a significant upgrade over the China-market A10, which uses less powerful motors.

Design and Dimensions

The model is named B03X internationally to avoid confusion with smaller A-segment cars. Its dimensions classify it as a B-SUV. The vehicle is 4,270 mm long, 1,810 mm wide, and has a 2,605 mm wheelbase.

For context, the BYD Atto 2 is 40 mm longer and 20 mm wider. Compared to the Proton eMas 5, the B03X is 135 mm longer but has a 45 mm shorter wheelbase.

Equipment and Tuning

Several features from the China-market A10 will not be available on the global B03X. The car driven by media in Spain lacked a panoramic glass roof, rear passenger flip-down tables, and under-seat storage. The accessory attachment on the central air vents is also omitted.

However, the under-seat storage may come to Europe as an accessory pending homologation. The test cars in Spain were fitted with Yokohama BluEarth GT tyres. Crucially, the ride and handling for the global model were tuned by Stellantis at its Balocco proving ground in Italy.

Pricing and Market Position

Final pricing remains subject to negotiations between Stellantis and the Malaysian government. The carmaker's ideal positioning is for a recommended retail price just above RM100,000. This would place it below the locally assembled Leapmotor B10 Design, which is priced at RM118,800.

The success of this pricing strategy hinges on ongoing discussions regarding compliance and incentives. The report concludes by asking for reader opinions on the B03X's design and overall package.
