Royal Enfield has launched the Himalayan 440 at Rs 2.29 lakh ex-showroom in Chennai. The motorcycle was unveiled at the Himalayan Basecamp event in Ladakh, four months after the initial exclusive report. It shares its engine and transmission with the Scram 440 but features distinct wheel and suspension setups.
Engine and Transmission
The Himalayan 440 is powered by the same engine as the Scram 440, producing 25.4hp and 34Nm of torque. This represents an increase of 1.4hp and 2Nm over the Himalayan 411’s unit, achieved through a 3mm larger bore. Power and torque are delivered earlier in the rev range, with 90 percent of torque available from 2,800rpm. The bike idles at 1,300rpm.
It uses a 6-speed transmission and has a 15-litre fuel tank, both shared with the Scram 440. Braking components are identical: a 300mm front disc with two-piston floating calipers and a 240mm rear disc with a single-piston floating caliper. Dual-channel ABS is standard, with the rear ABS switchable off.
Instrument Cluster and Features
The Himalayan 440 features a new twin-pod instrument cluster, replacing the four-pod layout of the 411. The left pod contains the speedometer, while the right pod includes the tripper unit for Google Maps-powered navigation. LED headlights and switchgear are shared with the Scram 440. A notable upgrade is the USB Type-C charger, which replaces the USB Type-A unit found on the Scram 440.
Wheels and Suspension
Unlike the Scram 440, which uses a 19-inch front wheel, the Himalayan 440 is equipped with a 21-inch front wheel and retains a 17-inch rear wheel. Alloy wheels offered on the Scram 440 are not available on the Himalayan 440, reflecting its off-road focus. Front suspension travel has been increased to 200mm from the Scram 440’s 190mm, matching the Himalayan 411. Rear suspension travel remains at 180mm with a linkage monoshock.
Despite the increased suspension travel, seat height has risen by only 5mm compared to the Scram 440. Kerb weight has increased to 199kg, up 12kg from the Scram 440.
Warranty and Colour Options
Royal Enfield has introduced an extended warranty of up to 7 years across its lineup, beginning with the Himalayan 440. The standard warranty is 3 years/30,000km (40,000km for 650cc models), so the extension adds 4 years/10,000km of coverage.
The Himalayan 440 is available in three colours: Mustang Brown, Nela White, and Sela Black. All variants are priced at Rs 2.29 lakh ex-showroom, Chennai. Bookings have opened at showrooms nationwide and on the company website, with deliveries expected to begin soon as units reach dealerships.
